The Director spoke while hosting the nurses of the university on Friday, 8th May 2026 in commemoration of Nursing Week held globally.
In an appreciation ceremony, Dr Ezeonu stated that the gathering provided an opportunity for nurses in the institution to join their counterparts around the world in celebrating Nursing Week.
She hailed the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie for promoting a healthy, peaceful and conducive working environment in the university noting that the moment calls for reflection, appreciation, and social interaction among nurses.
She further emphasised that nursing is a noble profession and a calling even as he noted the forum was the first time such a large-scale official celebration was being organised within the medical centre during her tenure.
According to her, although such an opportunity for celebration had always existed, it had not been previously utilised in this way hence the reason she found it necessary to organise and host the event.
She added that many of the Nurses present had served the university for over 30 years, and the celebration was also meant to appreciate their selfless services and dedication.
In her contribution, Dr. Ozo Florence Chinyere, Director and Head of Nursing Services, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, expressed her joy at the celebration, noting that it reflected the love and appreciation given to healthcare professionals.
She stated that since her employment at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in the year 2000, such opportunities for celebration had always been present but had not been organised in this manner before.
She advised her colleagues and upcoming nurses to always have God in mind, prioritise patient care, and remember that nursing is a calling. She also thanked the Director of Medical Services for the kind gesture and prayed for God’s continued guidance throughout her tenure.
Similarly, Lady Enwerekowe Onyinye, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), UNIZIK Unit, described the event as an appreciation gathering. She emphasised that Nurses deserve to be celebrated for their selfless service.
