VC UNIZIK Joins Dignitaries to Mourn Former UNN VC, Prof. Charles Igwe.
The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, joined a host of dignitaries, scholars, and sympathisers at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith, Awka, to honour the life and legacy of former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe.
Professor Igwe, who served as the 15th substantive Vice-Chancellor of UNN from 2019 to 2024, passed away on December 27, 2025, following a heart attack. He was remembered as an exceptional scholar, mentor, and administrator whose contributions significantly shaped Nigeria’s academic landscape.
Representing the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the Deputy Governor, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, described the late professor as an erudite scholar whose life embodied diligence, integrity, and service. He noted that the large turnout at the event reflected the enduring value of hard work and impactful living. He also urged young people to embrace discipline and integrity, cautioning against the growing pursuit of quick wealth at the expense of societal values.
Delivering the sermon, the officiating Bishop, Emmanuel Chukwuma, portrayed Professor Igwe as a humble, accessible, and devoted Anglican faithful. He called on public office holders to remain accountable and committed to service, reminding them of their ultimate responsibility before God.
In his condolence message, the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anyaehie, described the late Igwe as a rare gem—peace-loving, honest, and deeply committed to mentorship. He noted that UNN, Anambra State, and Nigeria at large have lost a visionary leader whose tenure left lasting and impactful legacies. He prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
The solemn event attracted an array of distinguished personalities, including the widow, Lady Ngozi Igwe, family members, and the current Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Uchenna Atuanya. Also present were former UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Charles Esimone; former Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba; and Prof. Fidelis Okafor, among other notable academics and dignitaries.
Until his passing, Professor Igwe was a distinguished Professor of Soil Science, widely respected for his pioneering work in tropical soil stability. An indigene of Awka, his legacy as a scholar, administrator, and mentor will continue to inspire generations within Nigeria’s academic community and beyond.
