This is the maiden conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) organized by the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Anambra State, Nigeria. The department is home to studies on antimicrobial resistance and boasts of an energetic research community in this area. Our researchers have collaborations all over the country and worldwide.
This conference will bring together researchers, health professionals and policy makers to discuss the latest findings on drug resistance surveillance and the control of the development of resistance. Our goal is to enhance a multidisciplinary approach, from basic research to implementation-based research in the fight against AMR and to raise awareness on One Health policy and data integrity. This is critical for addressing the
multifaceted challenges of AMR in Nigeria. Nigeria grapples with a significant AMR burden, with notable pathogens like Streptococcus pneumoniae and Klebsiella pneumoniae causing a high number of infections and deaths due to the failure of commonly used antibiotics. The conference will detail how robust research and surveillance should inform policy and practice.
