Those concerned are teaching and non-teaching staff and Professors born in 1953 and 1948 respectively.

 


Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has emerged the winner of The Regional Final for the 2017 Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) programme by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), held in Lagos.

 

It is worthy to note that out of twenty-one (21) schools that registered for the completion, only fourteen schools were able to submit their slides before the deadline day.  Only four schools participated in the sub-Sahara African Region Semi-Final, each participating school was given 25 minutes for technical presentation and ten minutes for question and answer.  Four judges from Oil and gas Industry – ExxonMobil, Shell, Schlumberger, and Total, and host of industry and academic based observers were present.  The data set for the completion which was released for the Participating Schools on 28th November, 2016 was given maximum of eight weeks to interpret the given data set and submit PowerPoint slide not later than 20th January, 2017 by 4.00p.m.

Following a stiff competition, ‘UNIZIK TEAM’ emerged as the winner of the regional final with 70.8% on the average, while the University of Lagos came 2nd place with 66.9%.

 

Having emerged the winner of the completion, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka hereby stands to represent the Sub-Sahara Africa Region with University of Western Cape South Africa at the Africa Regional final competition to be held in South Africa with other two Universities that will represent north africa Region.

The newly admitted students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University have expressed hope of doing well during their examination, despite challenges and delays encountered during their registration.

Speaking to some of the students, they said that going through the registration processes and still attend lectures have not been easy, as most often, the processes do not take place at a particular venue, hence delaying and causing rush to lectures. Onyinye Ikelue, Chidera Obikogu, and Kenneth Chikelue of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences said they collected notes from their classmates who started before them, so they are well prepared for the examination. Although, few students of the faculty of Engineering and Biosciences sounded skeptical because of the hectic nature of combining registration and lectures, however, they would do their best during the exam.

It is worthy of note that the first exam for the semester (GS) was written earlier at the digital library, using computer by every student and the results were sent to the phones of the students. faculties were grouped and wrote the exam on different dates. Also, the exam was written by only registered students who were checked-in accordingly.

 

 

Nnamdi Azikiwe University has commenced its first semester examination for the 2016/2017 academic session.  UNIZIK Bulletin Crew was present at the various Faculties to know how the exams were held.

The CBN Hall was filled with students from various Departments and levels of the Faculty taking the following examination at the same time.

GME 473- “Developed world examination” was going on at the Department of Geography and Meteorology lecture hall. Prof. Enete was the invigilator in charge of the examination.

 

  • At the Faculty of Engineering:

The FEC hall was filled with the two hundred level engineering students who were writing FEG 250- “principle of material sciences”. The following lecturers were on ground to check and invigilate the examination; Okechukwu Nneto, Engr. T.C. Okafor and Engr. Mrs. P. Ajator.

  • At the Faculty of Arts:

The third year students of the Department of English and literature were at the Multipurpose Hall, writing “African fiction”- ELT- 361

 

  • At the Faculty of Law:

The Faculty of Law, Dr. Amaka Eze and Dr. Ibekwe were invigilating “Jurisprudence- Law 527 at the Fourth year constituency Hall.

 

  • At the Faculty of Management Sciences:

At the Faculty of Management Sciences Hall 1 and 16, ECO- 211 “Micro Economics I” was going on simultaneously, and Enemuoh Uzoezie Chuka was invigilating the students.

 

  • At the Faculty of Physical Sciences:

At the Department of Physics lecture Hall, the 400L students were writing PHY 403- “Computational Physics” and it was being invigilated by Dr. Donald Okoli. Same was happening at the ICH Hall where PHY 403- “Computational Physics” was also going on, and Dr. Egwuonwu was the invigilator present.

Management, at its 334th Regular meeting held on Monday, 6th of February, 2017 has recalled Ogueli Kingsley C. of the Department of Adult Education, Faculty of Education from suspension and noted that he was suspected of being a member of a cult group in the University.

Management also noted that he has served out the two years suspension and that he did not violate the condition of his suspension during the period.  Management further noted that he has since renounced his membership of the cult group.

He is hereby recalled accordingly with effect from 7th of February, 2017, on the condition that he will henceforth be of good behaviour.

 

 

 

Management at its 334th Regular meeting held on Monday, 6th of February, 2017 considered the report of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee on the posting of an internet publication capable of disrupting the peace of the University and noted that evidence shows that Eweama, Samuel C. of the Department of Computer Sciences published insulting and threatening messages to the Vice-Chancellor, the University Community and members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Executive.

Consequent upon the above, the Management directed that he should be suspended from the University for two academic sessions and he is, hereby, suspended accordingly with effect from 5th November, 2016.

Also, Management at the same meeting considered the report of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee on a case of stealing of a Laptop in which Odigbo, Chijoke Emmanuel of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering was indicted and found culpable.

Consequently upon the above, Management directed that he should be suspended for one year and he is hereby, suspended accordingly with effect from 5th November, 2016.

 

Management, at its 334th Regular meeting held on Monday, 6th February, 2017, considered the report of the Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee that investigated Mr. Collins Chukwunyere Orji’s alleged involvement in admission racketeering as well as fraudulent activities and observed as follows:

 

(1) There were a lot of inconsistencies in his oral interview as he testified that he gave N400,000.00 to one Mr. Kingsley as against the N350,000.00 in his written statement

(2) Mr. Orji misled the University in the course of the investigation by leading the security team to the said Mr. Kingsley’s shop that had been under lock and key for more than eight (8) years now;

 

(3) He left the trip of the investigating team to Mr. Ogene’s hometown at Atani and pleaded for forgiveness.

 

Management, after exhaustively considering the report, found that the cases of admission racketeering and fraud were established against him.  It therefore, decided as follows:-

(i)   That Mr. Collins Orji be dismissed from the University with immediate effect;

(ii)  Mr. Collins Orji is required to handover all University property in his possession to his Head of Department and

(iii)  He is forbidden from entering the University forthwith.

 

 

 

The Faculty of Engineering Board recently conducted election for the positions of sub-Dean and Senate Representative.

Dr. C. O. Nwajinka of Agric & Bio Resources Department was declared winner with a total of 43 votes for the post of Sub-Dean while Dr. M. C. Menkiti of Chemical Department won with 56 votes for Senate representative.

Applications are invited from qualified candidates, particularly Practising Journalists without any qualification in Journalism or Mass Communication for admission into the Professional Diploma in Journalism (PDJ) Programme offered by the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The programme is aimed at equipping journalists, especially those who have practiced the profession or several years without any formal qualification in Journalism or Mass Communication, with the theoretical knowledge to remedy their deficiency.

 

Entry Qualification

At least five O’Level credits obtained in not more than two sittings, including English Language.

 

Duration of Programme

The (PDJ) is a part time programme that is expected to run for a minimum of three semesters of 18 calendar months.

 

Nature of Programme

The PDJ is a part-time programme in which practicing Journalists will attend lectures two to three days in a week between 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. to give them the freedom to attend to their daily professional assignments in the morning hours.

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION INTO PROFESSIONAL AND PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY CHIKE OKOLI CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES (COCES)

 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admissions to the professional and proficiency Certificate Programmes offered by Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies (COCES), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

 

 

The programmes are aimed at imparting entrepreneurial education and practical skills training and life-long skills in people who desire them and the certificate programmes are expected to run for varying durations as follows:

Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. The Lenten season is a time when many Christians observe a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, self-denial and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ – his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial, and resurrection. During the six weeks of self-examination and reflection, Christians who observe Lent typically make a commitment to fast, or to give up something—a habit, such as smoking, a particular type of  food or drink. Some Christians also take on a Lenten discipline, such as reading the Bible and spending more time in prayer to draw nearer to God. Strict observers do not eat meat on Fridays, having fish instead. The goal is to strengthen the faith and spiritual discipline of the observer and develop a closer relationship with God. Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional or praying through a Lenten calendar, to draw themselves near to God. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ’s carrying the Cross and of his execution, are often observed. Many Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches remove flowers from their altars, while crucifixes, religious statues, and other elaborate religious symbols are often veiled in violet fabrics in solemn observance of the event. Throughout Christendom, some adherents mark the season with the traditional abstention from the consumption of meat, most notably among Roman Catholics. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan.

 

What we should learn by Fasting during Lent

First, giving up something allows us make a tangible sacrifice to God. Although certain sacrifices are already present in our life, they’re sort of “built in” at this point. We don’t often experience giving up something for God on a daily basis. The act of sacrifice reminds us of our commitment to God and our desire to make him first in our life. Secondly, by giving up something we usually enjoy on a daily basis, we have sometimes found ourselves yearning for that thing. Frankly, we may have been tempted to give up our Lenten fast at times. We could easily argue that it’s unnecessary (it is optional, after all) and certainly not taught in Scripture. But, though we don’t think our effort at fasting makes God love or bless us more, we do think it raises our awareness of how much we depend on other things in life rather than God. We  see how easy it is for us to set up all sorts of little idols in our life. Fasting, in some way, helps us surrender our idols to God. Thirdly, when we give up something we like and then feel an unquenched desire for it, we are reminded of our neediness as a person. And neediness, we should believe, is the heart of true spirituality tailored towards God.  It is important also to note that you don’t just observe lent only by abstaining from food, or some kind of lifestyle, we can abstain from lies, quarrels, malice, stealing, unforgiveness, hatred, fighting, backbiting, gossip amongst many other vices that could create a gap between us and God this Lenten season.

Set a goal this season and make effort to achieve it or them, no matter how little.

 

 

HOD, Department of Music Loses Mother

 

The Head, Department of Music, Rev. Sr. Prof. Cordis Marie Achikeh has lost her mother, late Madam Florence Nonyem Achikeh (nee Onwunyi) a.k.a Odoziaku.  She died at the age of 91.  Burial Arrangements:  Thursday, 23rd March, 2016 by 5.00 p.m. – Christian wake keep at her compound; Friday, 24th March, 2017 by 6.00 p.m. – Corpse leaves the Mortuary to her compound, by 7.00 a.m. – lying-in-state at her compound, Igbulia Ogbetiti, Odekpe, 10.00a.m. – Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Odekpe, 12 noon – Interment at her compound, followed by condolence visits; Saturday, 25th March, 2017 – Condolence visit continues; Sunday, 26th March, 2017 – Outing Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Odekpe

 

 

 

One of the Foundation Staff of the University, Prof. G. U. Okereke is dead.  He died on 26th of December, 2016 at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku Ozalla, Enugu State after a brief illness.

He was variously Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, Pioneer director of the Biotech Centre and Chairman of the committee on the University history.

He was the husband of Mrs. Victoria Ifeoma Okereke, a retired staff of the University, brother of Engineer Okey Okereke, the Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Ada Anyamene, Department of Guidance and Counselling and brother-in-law to Professor Chris Anyamene of the Department of Applied Microbiology and Brewing.  Electronic copies of condolence messages can be sent to nkemkjk@yahoo.com or by hand to Dr. Ada Anyamene.  Details of the funeral arrangement will be forwarded later.
