Technology has been said to be of great importance in combating terrorism and corruption in Nigeria. This was said by the Guest Lecturer and the Dean, Students’ Affairs of the University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Boniface K. Alese during the 6th Annual Faculty of Physical Sciences lecture series.

According to him, terrorism and corruption are two brothers that have become a menace to human endeavor and has been challenging to Nigeria. He started with the origin, definitions, causes of terrorism and corruption, as well as the consequences. The impact of these menaces has been colossal and has further deepened the misery of citizens, consequently, threatening the fabrics of the society. Combating terrorism and corruption is therefore a herculean task that requires multi-faceted approach, prominent amongst which is ICT. The coming of ICT he said, has been of tremendous effect, because it is a potent tool in the hands of both the attackers and defenders.

Prof. Alese said that corruption promotes poverty and creates the condition for political instability, criminalization especially among the youths. The professor of Computer Sciences concluded that ICT is a tool of attack and defense, much as it aid corruption in any society, the society determines how it is utilized based on polities and laws.

In his opening remark, the Chairman of the event, Prof. Ikenna Onyido, FAS thanked and appreciated the Dean of the faculty for continuing the Annual lecture series. He expressed hope that the lecture will stimulate researchers into the current problem of combating terrorism and corruption and that the practical steps outlined in the lecture would help the Nigerian Government in overcoming terrorism and minimize corruption.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. J. E. Ahaneku, FAS who was ably represented by the DVC (Acad) Prof. Charles Esimone welcomed all dignitaries to UNIZIK for the Annual Faculty lecture series. He commended the Faculty of Physical Sciences for sustaining the tempo of its annual lecture series which has contributed immensely to keeping the academic flame of the University glowing. He said that the theme: “Combating Terrorism and Corruption: The Role of ICT” is coming at the time when the fight against corruption and terrorism are key element in the change agenda of the Federal Government.

Speaking also, the keynote speaker, Air-vice Marshal Udoh Tommy Victor said it was a great pleasure to be in UNIZIK. He addressed NAU as a symbol of academic excellence that has produced some of our nation’s finest. He commended the organizers of the lecture, and thanked them for choosing the theme that best suits the country’s situation. Concerning terrorism, he said that it has ravaged our society particularly the Northeast, hence, we are a Nation awaked to danger and trepidation from a threat that hitherto was alien to us. He opined that corruption creates terrorism in Nigeria and terrorism in turn creates poverty which is one of the leading causes of corruption.

Furthermore, AVM Udoh stated that for Nigeria to combat terrorism and corruption, it is necessary to mainstream ICT as one of the viable tools that can be adequately employed in addition to the existing efforts. He challenged all to stimulate their thoughts and channel efforts towards finding far reaching solutions to the issues at stake.

The Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Prof. A. J. Ekpunobi thanked and appreciated all present at the lecture. He said that the lecture which started in 2011 will henceforth be published in the faculty journal starting this year (2017) and will be online.
