Dr George Eleje of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria, was among the gyne-oncology team of Nigerian Researchers awarded a small grant by the Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup (GCIG) Cervical Cancer Research Network (CCRN) in May 2021.
The grant which is to enable the team conduct the study titled “Improving Treatment Outcome for Cervical Cancer Using 2-Point Assessment of Quality of Life among Nigerian women – A Multi-Center Study”. The major aim of the project is to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) among women with cervical cancer in Nigeria using a two-point pre & post treatment assessment index. He is co-investigator with four-others.
Similarly, Dr Chukwurah Shirley Nneka of the department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Nnewi campus, Anambra State was awarded a grant by Philips Pharmaceuticals Limited in July 2021. The grant which was to assist in the celebration of world hepatitis day 2021 with the theme ’Hepatitis can’t wait’. The aim was to create awareness on viral hepatitis, encourage screening for hepatitis B and C and subsidize vaccination for those who are negative. The 2021 world hepatitis day was celebrated with the new clinical intake (4th year) medical students of the college of health sciences, Nnewi. There was one student incidentally found to be positive for hepatitis B out of 112 students screened. No student tested positive to Hepatitis C. 89 of the students commenced immunization on that day.
