COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR GUIDANCE OF COUNSELLING
Psychological Testing
The students will be exposed to the meaning, needs and importance of Psychological testing in the school system. An examination of various psychological testing in vocational, educational, academic and social decisions made. In addition, students would be taught the techniques of construction of psychological test items. It’s grouping and organization in relation to personality variables.
GCE 204: Theories of Personality and Social Adjustment
The nature of the psychological characteristics of individuals, the differences and social adjustment/maladjustment and the implications for teaching and learning situation. A few of the theories of personality such as those by Freud, Sullivan, Murray, Jung, Adler, Rogers, Fromm are examined.. Simple approaches to the measurement of personality can be introduced. An emphasis on the intervention role of guidance and counselling where necessary.
GCE 205: Community Counselling And Psychology
The meaning of community psychology and counselling, the objectives of community psychology and counselling dynamics of class within community, single parent family. Young widows and widowers with children, drug and alcoholic addict, the problems of teenage pregnancy.
GCE 206: Adolescence Psychology and Counselling
An examination of the maturational, physical, emotional and intellectual problems associated with the development in adolescence, their psychological needs for adjustment and facilitative role of guidance and counselling in teaching and learning situation.
GCE 207: Psychology of Deviant Behaviour
The concept of deviant behaviour and its identifying characteristics. Some common forms of deviant behaviour and their causes among Nigerian school children. Effects of deviant behaviour on school performance. Methods of handling deviant behaviour among children.
GCE 209: Cognitive Processes
Overview of cognitive theories of development. Variety learned capabilities, cognitive strategies in attending, encoding, retrieval, problem-solving and thinking, acquiring and transferring cognitive strategies, learning styles and educational implications.
GCE 301: Organization and Administration of Guidance and Counselling
An examination of guidance and counselling programmes and models, their selection criteria, control and supervision; use of paraprofessional and other support personnel; appraisal, of National Police on Educational provision for guidance and Counselling.
GCE 302: Vocational/Career Guidance and Counselling
Basic theories of vocational development, choice and career patterns e.g. Supper’s, Roe’s, Holland’s and Ginzberg’s definition of career, occupation, vocation, job amid professional from cognitive and the psychomotor domains. A study of the theoretical bases and approaches of counselling Psychoanalytic, client-centred: behavioural, rational; emotive and eclectic, implications of the theories, vocational development and choice in the Nigerian setting should be treated. Role of guidance counselling in facilitating decision-making relating to selection placement and academic pursuits.
GCE 303: Practicum in Guidance and Counselling I
The course will expose and prepare the students to be able to do the following: An application of the principles and techniques of guidance and counselling in a clinical setting and Skill in observation, interviewing, and cumulative record keeping. Visits and interviews with personnel in various counselling setting such a elementary, secondary and tertiary institutions, juvenile courts, remand homes and offices to be carried out.
GCE 304: Principles of Interpersonal Relationship
Examines the meaning, the content and value of interpersonal relationship within the school setting and the society. The course further surveys the skills and conditions necessary for smooth interpersonal relationship. A review of the implications of the role of interpersonal relationship will be emphasized.
GCE 305: Occupational Visit
The meaning and nature of occupational visit would be examined. The course would expose the students to the principles underlying the collation of occupational data through occupational visit. It would further consider the objectives, nature and structure of organizational, industrial and institutional setting. It would also consider time development of appropriate education programme. The students would also be exposed to skills of acquitting of occupational data through occupational visit.
GCE 306: Family Counselling
The meaning implication of stage psycho-social development, significance of sex drive, problems of general diseases, marriage and family and modes of living and socialization. Marital problems could be discussed based on current needs.
GCE 307: Group Dynamics
The course aims at examining various types/group, theories of group, types of leadership, communication within the group and interpersonal relationship, the functions of group, characteristics of organization and disorganization. The implications of each would also be reviewed and discussed.
GCE 308: Rehabilitation Counselling
The course examines the meaning and concept and of Rehabilitation Counselling. The course will also focus on the programme, classification of problems associated with rehabilitation and management of teaching approaches to rehabilitation. Finally the implications of rehabilitation to human behaviour within the environmental context will be reviewed.
GCE 403: Practicum in Guidance and Counselling II
An extension of clinical experience to field experience culminating in specific group/individual study of specific problems; the designs and implementation of counselling strategies. Students conduct counselling sessions in selected sites, on various problems stemming from vocational, educational and personal social problems.
GCE 404: Behaviour Modification
The study of psychological techniques of changing behaviour applying principles of successive approximation, schedules of reinforcement to desired specific behavioural goals of guidance and counselling.
GCE 405: Industrial Relations in Counselling
An examination of the motivational factors associated with occupational and industrial crises would be discussed. The course would review the psychological needs of workers for adjustment; facilitative productive roles would be highlighted.
GCE 406: Techniques in Continuous Assessment
The nature and role of Continuous Assessment in diagnostic and prescriptive management in teaching and learning situation. Cumulative record-keeping for guidance and counselling. A review of achievement test construction techniques. The keeping of records of Continuous Assessment; the use of achievement test scores (emphasizing statistical techniques such as the measurement of central tendency and dispersion, transformation of scores, weighting of scores) for obtaining a student academic profile. The use of scores for inter and intra-school comparison for streaming along with other factors at the end of the junior and senior secondary school.
GCE 407: Abnormal Psychology
Historical evolution of abnormal psychology. The concept of “Normality and Abnormality”. The course discusses issues in neurosis and psychosis along with neurotic and psychotic disorders. Theories of psychopathology – symptoms and counselling approaches, practical psycho-diagnosis and management techniques, principles of behaviour modification.
GCE 408: Pastoral Counselling (Religion in Counselling)
Definition of Religion, views on formation of diverse religions. Religion, human needs and social functions. The functional role of religion in personality adjustment and maintenance of social order. What Christianity and Islamism have in common. What Christianity and Traditional religion have in common. Areas of difference among these religions. The concept of sin, guilt feeling, repentance and reconciliation with God.
