A study of the nature of Business Organisations. The Character of Business from a Social and Economic Perspective. Scope of Business; Definition of Business; External Properties of Business; Role of Business; Types of Economic Systems Why Study Business.

FORMS OF BUSINESS OWNERSHIP

Sole proprietorship, Partnership, Joint Stock Company; Statutory Corporations/Public Enterprises, and Cooperative  Societies.

MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION

Nature of Management; Functions of Management; Line and Staff Function in Organisations.

PRODUCTION AND MARKETING

Types of Production; Production Processes; The Marketing Concept; marketing Functions.

THE FINANCE FUNCTION

Staffing and Directing: Section for Managers, Appraisal of Managers, Management Development, Nature of Directing, Motivation Leadership controlling: The Control Process, Control Technique, Recent Developments in the Control Process.   1. BUS 221 – BUSINESS STATISTICS I (3 CREDITS)

Meaning and scope of statistics, Methods of Collecting and analyzing Business Data: frequency distribution and graphical representation; Describing Business Data: Measures of location; Measures of variability, Elementary treatment of Probability, the normal curve and sampling distribution. Linear regression and correlation: business forecasting and time series analysis, Hypotheses testing. Application of statistics to such areas as investment analysis, educational administration and business sector situations.

 

  1. BUS 222 – Business Statistics II (3 credits)

(Pre-Requisite: BUS 221

Probability theory, stochastic variables, multiplication and addition rules, formulations and combinations, Bayes Theory. Discrete and continuous probability distributions as used in business, e.g. Binomial Multinomial Poisson and Normal distribution. Chi-Square, simple Regression and Correlation; Sampling, types and methods, Point and Interval Estimation, Index numbers, Bayesian analysis: Payoff table, Decision trees, Analysis of variance, Quality control in business, Decision theory, Parametric and non-parametric statics; distinctions and application in business.

 

  1. BUS 241 – INTRODUCTION TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP (2 CREDIT)

Definition of Entrepreneurship. The historical and economic role of entrepreneurship. Theory and practice of Entrepreneurship. Starting and managing a new enterprise. Characteristics of entrepreneurs, the identification and evaluation of new venture opportunities, resource utilization, strategy development and successful planning, implementing the and launching of new business ventures. Analyses of case studies and developing of detail business plan for starting and owing and enterprise.

 

 

 

  1. BUS 311- HUMAN RESOURCS MANAGEMENT I (3 CREDITS)

This course is designed to familiarize executives and students with modern Human Resource Management techniques, and method successfully adopted in progressive industrial and commercial organization. Introduction and application of various Human Resources Management principles, approaches to personnel management, line and staff organization structure. Supply and demand characteristics of labour – by type organization of the personnel functions, manpower planning; motivation; leadership styles; training and Development; Performance appraisal; Disciplinary procedures, employee welfare.

 

  1. BUS 323 – Quantitative Method and Operations Research (3 Credits)

Introduction to Linear Programming: the Simplex Method and Graphical Method of Solution. Network Analysis. Queuing Theory, Mankov Chain, Transportation algorithm, Matrices and Decision Tree, Assignment Problems.

 

  1. BUS 305: Management Theory (3 CREDITS)

Concepts of theory in the physical and social sciences. Level of theory. The features of theory in management. Links between management theories and management models. Practice of management conduct as a test of good management theory. Existing difficulties of developing useful management theories in Nigeria and other developing countries. Theories of management, e.g. the scientific management movement, the human relations movement, the systems movement, and the managerial behaviour movement, Theory X and Theory Y, The grid approach, participative models, management by objectives, Quantitative and Behavioural control models. Testing, specific theories and models in Nigeria. Gitina for locating bad management theories may be introduced to particular Nigerian organizations.

 

  1. BUS 313-Organisational Behaviour (3 CREDITS)

This course is intended to provide an effective, behaviourally-oriented way of viewing and thinking about the business enterprises. Readings and critical discussions of classical and recently published works assessing behavioural sciences theory, concepts of behaviour, organization, managers, administrators, and performance. Individual behavioral processes such as personnel systems, self concept, development interaction styles, group behavioural processes such as informal structures, norms of work and play, status based rewards and punishments, leadership, organizational behaviours and their relevance to Nigeria. Integrity, and motivation theories. Attitude to work, behaviour modification. Formal work system, the challenges of informal and emergent work systems. The limitations of policies, laws, regulations, designing effective organizations in Nigeria empirical data on supervision and managerial and employee behaviour in Nigeria.

 

  1. BUS. 312 – Industrial Relations (3 Credits)

A survey of industrial relations law in Nigeria. Union organization and functions. Union objectives and behaviour, impact of the Union upon management. Trade union federation, central labour organization, and international affiliations. The nature of collective bargaining, are legal framework of collective bargaining, structure collective bargaining, negotiating the agreement, subject matter of collective bargaining public sector, strikes disputes, Trade Union Federation; Central Labour Organization and International Affiliations; Union Solidarity abd checks of systems; Industrial disputes; Dispute Settlement; Joint Consultation; Comparative Industrial Relations System and Theory.

               

  1. BUS 324- Business Forecasting (3 Credits)

General economic and business environment of the firm in forecasting: Methodology in forecasting: The statistical approach, e.g. Time series and regression coefficient, multiple regression, model building econometric approach; the objective approach to forecasting in business. Projecting the trend of business economically input-output analysis, management of forecasting methods and economic and business activities.

 

  1. BUS. 398 – Research Methodology (3 Credits)

Developing students skills in analyzing and writing reports based on an empirical library study of a specific subject matter or topic in relevant management area. Information gathering, analysis and interpretation in dealing with business and organizational behaviour. Sampling and sampling design. Time and cost problems in research.

 

  1. BUS 406-Advanced Management Theory 1 (3 Credit)

Overview of system Approach and Methodology, Data Processing System and Design; Management Information System. Human Factor; Man-machine Systems, organizational Design Method, Training, Cybernetics etc. Testing of Specific theories and models in Nigeria. Practice in construction of management theories from the Nigerian Socio-Cultural experiences of managing extended family issues, of settling group conflicts, of securing productivity at work, maintaining control over the forces in the environment. Theories observable in the way Nigerian parastatals are being managed. Expatriate management approaches to work in Nigerian organizations. The confluence of Management Philosophy, Management Theory, and Managerial Behaviour in Nigeria. Criteria for locating bad management practices, and ideas of how better management theories may be introduced to particular Nigerian organizations. A comprehensive study of the decision process and methodology for examining defining, analyzing and solving complete problems.

Emphasis is on leading theories and concepts in the management of bureaucratic structures, administrative behaviour and techniques, and their environment.

 

  1. BUS. 442 Entrepreneurship and Small Business management (3 Credits)

Entrepreneurial theories. Interpersonal characters and behavioural traits of entrepreneurs. Theory and practice of small business management. Focus on affective management of small firms, essentials of planning and organizing the firm, financial and administrative controls, evaluation of alternative business forms, and comparism of new business start-ups. The role of small business in Nigeria society. A comprehensive course in Management with emphasis on the process of establishing, organizing and operating small business enterprise. The course also includes a discussion of such related topics as  assessing marketing potential, funds procurement, designing, and accounting system, planning and controlling operations and managing growth. The importance of all business management and its relationship to Nigeria economy, and the opportunities and requirements unique to operation and management.

 

  1. BUS 407 – International Business (3 Credits)

A consideration of the financial problems of firms engaged in international business including the effect of the host-country policies on private investment flows. The importance of International Trade, International Trade and specialization. International trade and the company  problems of international trade. Facilitating international trade, organization export, organization for importing government control and world commerce. World economic communities, Multinational corporation.

 

  1. BUS 431 – Business Policy I (3 Credits)

Definition of Policy in relation to Business Policy formulation, implementation, and feedback. An overview of Business environment in relation to decision making process. Business planning and forecasting. Elements of business in relation to product and service strategy. Managerial business behaviour, societal issues in Business Policy. Government intervention and policy making processes. Strategic structure environment of Business policy. The Business opportunity analysis. Business objectives, planning and strategy. The political and legal environment in Business policy. The impact of societal expectations upon policy formulation and implementation. The profit motive in Business Policy.

 

19           BUS 425 – Production Management (3 (credits)

General Introduction to production Management. Product and Process Design. Facilities Location and Layout of facilities, project planning and scheduling – use of the critical path method, PERT etc. Linear programming models for planning Transportation problem. Inventory control Management. Quality control, Maintenance and replacement Analysis.

 

  1. BUS 408 – Comparative Management (3 Credits)

The comparative approach to management and Administration; Elementary of Management and Administration. The skill of management in private and public sector. The Military administrator, the civil servant, the manager as inter-changeable experts. Constraints of organizational setting on the Management of group activities. Profiles of Nigerian executives that have moved from public to private sectors and vice versa. The use of management consultants and management in stream lining the operation of Nigeria, railways, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Airways, and the NNPC, Theories of comparative management. Constraints imposed on managerial discretion in public corporations. A human resources management model that meets the needs of private and public sectors. Selected problems in comparative management and Administration Motivating Personnel, controlling and rewarding performance; Training and developing staff, introducing change, and modifying employee behaviour.   1. BUS. 426 – Analysis for Business Decisions (3 (Credits)

Elements of Decision Analysis, Types of Decision situations, Decision Trees, Operational research Approach to Decision analysis, systems and system analysis. Modeling in operations Research simulation; Mathematical programming, Transportation model, Assignment model; Conflict analysis and Games theory.

 

  1. BUS 432 – Business Policy II (3 Credits)

Classifying Behavioural influences on Policy – Personnel and interpersonal. Interpersonal determinants of policy directions, cultural influences on international Business Policy. Social Influences; Reference groups, social classes, opinion business leaders, consumer influences Business research influences on policy. Qualitative and quantitative tools for policy making process.

 

  1. BUS 443 – Corporate Planning (3 Credits)

The concepts and theory of planning, strategic planning, Environmental study and analysis, technological forecasting. Socio-political forecasting. Industry analysis, planning tasks and techniques, operational planning and the resources allocation processes, organization for planning organizational and behavioural planner, managing and corporate planning.

 

  1. BUS 451 – Business Ethics (3 Credits)

The course covers generally issues in the Ethics of business and business social responsibilities. Specific areas include Ethics and business ethics defines; Ethical Principles Ethical Reasoning, Principles of Utility, Rights, justice and fairness, Ethical codes of Ethics, sources of Ethics, Ethical Relativism, Utilitarianism and universalism.   1. BUS 499 – Research Project (6 Credits)

An application of business research methods. A planning programme of observation, study and work in a selected firm or organization. A project paper is required in the course and students are required to apply the concepts of research techniques applicable to Business decision making.
