The senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University at its 184th emergency meeting held on 22nd May, 2017 elected representatives into the 8th University Governing Council.

 

The election which was held at the University Auditorium was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS.

262 senators were present for the meeting, and fourteen contested for the position out of which four senators were elected namely: Professors Ngozi Anyikwa, Peter Nnabude, Okwudili Udemezue and Ada Sam-Omenyi.

 

Details of the election will come next week.

 

 

 

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has extolled the leadership virtues of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS. He made this commendation during a courtesy visit to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor recently.

The renowned economist posited that he was marveled at the quality of the ongoing projects in the university, describing them as laudable and a product of foresightedness. The former CBN boss encouraged the Vice Chancellor not to relent in his good works in the university despite oppositions. He further prayed that the university, under Prof. Ahaneku will continue to soar higher.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his delight at the visit of the professor of econometrics, while commending the department of Business Administration under the leadership of Dr. Lilian Orogbu for achieving the lofty dream of bringing the world class professor to the university. Prof. Ahaneku described Prof. Soludo as one of those great people in the world, which ordinarily cannot be cloned. In his words, “Nigerians lack the goodwill to celebrate our people and present our people to the world”.  He noted that the University has been so lucky to have received prominent Nigerians, encouraging us with their piece of advice in order to promote and project this University named after the great Zik of the world, beyond the shores of this Country.

 

Furthermore, the VC explained that Zik’s inspiration has continued to be the driving force for the University, and opined that the varsity has continued to transcend barriers and break new grounds.

 

Present also for the visit were, Engr. Alex Unachukwu who represented the Hon. Senator Barau Jibrin, the Dean of the Faculty, Rev. Canon Prof. Kanayo Nkamnebe, LOC Members, amongst others.

 

 

 


The former CBN Governor, Prof. Charles C. Soludo was at the Awka Campus of the University to feature at the Department of Business Administration International Conference as the lead paper presenter.

 

Speaking during his welcome address at the Conference, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku expressed his delight on the choice of the lead paper presenter and keynote speaker, Senator Barau Jibrin, who is the Chairman, Senate committee on Tertiary Education and TETfund.  He commended the Department of Business Administration for sustaining its international conference series.  According to him, the theme of the conference, “Managing a Recessed Economy: Options for Nigeria, captures the serious economic challenges confronting Nigeria, which has been in the domain of public discourse in every segment of the society.  He expressed hope that the extensive and exhaustive sub-themes of the Conference would be very incisive in analyzing the country’s economic challenges and formulating the possible ways forward.

 

The Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Kanayo Nkamnebe congratulated the HOD of Business Administration, Dr. Lilian Orogbu, the LOC, staff and students of the Faculty for a successful conference.  In the same vein, he announced the Faculty’s plan to hold the Pita Ejiofor Annual Frontier Lecture to mark the Faculty’s 25th years of existence.

 

The Chairman, Prof. Pita Ejiofor in his opening remarks, apologized for his use of the English language for communication, as he has been known to use the Igbo Language for communication.  He said the lead paper presenter has been known for his great talents right from his days in the University. He congratulated him for his great achievements, while urging everyone to listen and gain from his wealth of knowledge.

 

The HOD, Dr. Orogbu thanked everyone, especially the speakers for coming for the Conference.  She thanked the VC for his support to the Department, and noted that the theme of the Conference is timely, considering the prevailing economic trajectory at this time of our national socio-economic history.  She thanked and prayed that God would take everyone back to their different destinations.

 

Prof. Charles Soludo, in his lecture titled: “Beyond recession, towards a sustainable economy in Nigeria”, said that Nigeria’s descent into recession and effort to overcome it has remained, due to lack of ideas and mismanagement of funds.  This, he said, came about because of the following: low accumulation of foreign reserve, low foreign inflow of capital, inconsistency of foreign currency, low savings, debt accumulation, borrowing to spend on capital, negligence of ideas by experts, faulty models amongst others.  Moreso, he noted that the consequences of the recession will take quite a while to filter, hence the need for intellectuals to think through, to get a model of sustainable reliance and blue print that can help Nigeria survive, apart from oil.

 

The keynote Speaker, Sen. Barau Jibrin, represented by Engr. Alex Unachukwu said the topic came when Nigeria is going through a trying period, which has brought about unemployment, high rate of suicide and suicide attempts, kidnapping, and liquidation of industries, all because of the failed economy.  He said there is a dire need for us to be sincere with ourselves in every aspect and that a framework, where stakeholders can come together to review the current situation of the country is required, if we must move forward.

 

The VC, after the lecture, presented the lead paper presenter and the keynote speaker with their portraits.

 

 

 

The Vice-President of Xiamen University, Prof. Zhan Xinli has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor during her visit in UNIZIK recently. She commended UNIZIK Confucius Institute for doing wonderfully well.

 

Welcoming them, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS expressed great happiness for having them in UNIZIK.  He said that the Confucius Institute (C. I.) will pave way for Nigerians that are interested in doing business in China.  He promised to do all within his power to improve and move Confucius Institute in UNIZIK to the next level.  Moreso, the programme he said, will avail both countries the opportunity to align their cultures.  Prof. Ahaneku stated that the Confucius Institute has translated from language and culture to technology, medicine and architecture as well.

He is optimistic that this partnership will aid to bond the two cultures.

 

In her remarks, Prof. Zhan Xinli thanked and appreciated the University for the warm reception received. She also expressed her profound joy to the Management on the developmental stride recorded at the Confucius Institute in UNIZIK and urged them not to relent.  She said that the two Universities (Xiamen and UNIZIK) will keep maintaining the enviable friendship.

 

Present also for the visit were, the director of Confucius Southern base of Hanban, Prof. Mao Tongwen, Director of Confucius Institute, UNIZIK, Dr. Wang Bo and others.

 

 

 

The 8th in the series of “rags to riches seminar” took place on Thursday, 11th May, 2017 at the Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (COCES) Auditorium.

The Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Willie Obiano, represented by the Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Entrepreneurship, Dr. (Mrs.) Uju Nwogu expressed the Governor’s love for the youths which explains why he has over fifty youths presently in his cabinet and the establishment of several skill acquisition centres in Anambra State.

 

Dr. (Mrs.) Nwogu advised the youths to think big, start small and be focused, as it will eventually take them off the streets, make them happy and self reliant.

 

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS, explained that UNIZIK lays foundation for youths to realize their dreams.  He urged them to acquire skills because our society is fast moving from a certificate carrying society, to skill exhibition society.  He urged them to plan their lives.

 

In her special remarks, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited and Chairman, Chike Okoli Foundation, Chief (Dr.) Stella Okoli, represented by the Executive Director, General Duties/HR/Finance, Emzor Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd., Mrs. Uzoma Ezeoke, expressed joy at the continued harnessing, imbibing and exhibition of skills to the youth at Chike Okoli, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies. She urged the students to develop allergies for lateness, excessive spending and work towards good time management.

Speaking further, Mrs. Ezeoke added that those who participated in the Seminar should go with the conclusion of a new beginning for a better society.

In his opening remark, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Frank Nneji, OON, Chairman/CEO, ABC Transport PLC, said that entrepreneurship had been with the Igbos since the early 50s, citing late Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu as Pioneers of entrepreneurs. Mr. Nneji lauded the efforts of automobile dealers at Nnewi and urged the youths to take good advantage of the seminar.

 

In her welcome address, the Director, Chike Okoli, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (COCES), Prof. Ngozi E. Anyikwa, stated that “Rags to Riches” Seminar is aimed at instilling students with a sense of self-confidence and to awaken them to the reality that entrepreneurship is a potential career in the face of bulging youth unemployment crisis in Nigeria.

She welcomed and thanked their benefactor, Chief (Dr.) Stella Okoli, the VC, Prof. Ahaneku, resource persons, staff and students of the University for their various contributions towards the success of the Seminar and the growth of the Centre.

 

Telling his success story, the Founder/CEO Coscharis Group, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, said that the culture of apprenticeship is seriously lacking in our youths today.  He narrated how his initial capital of two hundred naira metamorphosed to over fifty billion naira capital base business with twenty-six branches nationwide and branches at Ghana, Gabon and Coted’Ivoire.

Dr. Maduka concluded by saying that time is money as a result, youth should utilize the opportunity.  He urged them to imbibe the qualities of an entrepreneur.

Delivering a lecture on: ‘Entrepreneurial Mindset: Being your own Boss’, the Director, Strategies Partnership and liason, SMEDAN, Dr. Friday Okpara, stated that entrepreneurship encompasses action, mindset and process.

Speaking further, Dr. Okpara said that Entrepreneurship is a journey with a new paradigm, “Go to School, get good grades and acquire skills”.

In the same vein, an Employability Skill Experts/HR consultant and on air personality, Mr. Ukah, Francis who spoke on “Throwing in an entrepreneurship hostile economy”, advocated for riches to wealth seminar where those who have moved from rag to riches will be celebrated.  Mr. Ukah lamented on the rigorous process of business registration in the country and its adverse effect on young entrepreneurs.  He further itemized ideation, automation, globalization and correlation as survival tips for young entrepreneurs.

 

The Director, startup Hub, Mr. Chibuike Aguene, Speaking on “ideas to Business: Turning Dreams to Profits”, urged aspiring entrepreneurs to always spot a dissatisfaction gap and evaluate the idea before venturing into business.  Mr. Aguene stated that character is a must have for an entrepreneurs which can be converted to money.

In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Director, Chike Okoli, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Dr. Chike Ile, thanked every participant and contributor towards the success of the 8th Edition of “from rags to riches Seminar”.

 

 


The Faculty of Arts in collaboration with Chinese Research Centre of Nigeria, Confucius Institute, NAU recently held its 2017 Annual International Conference at the Faculty’s Auditorium.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of the occasion, the Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, MON represented by Engr. Barth Nwibe welcomed all to the scholarly deliberation on the critical issues that concerns Nigeria.  He congratulated the Dean and members of the Faculty on the choice of the topic:”Humanities and Change Management”. He is optimistic that after the discussion, solution will be proffered for the growth of our country.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS welcomed all for coming to grace the occasion with their presence. He also thanked the keynote Speaker, the former minister of Finance, National Planning and Transport, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, OFR and the Guest speaker, His Lordship Most Rev. Prof. G. Igwebike Onah for coming to share in their wealth of knowledge. The VC congratulated the Dean and staff of the Faculty for organizing the conference and for bringing men of timber and caliber to UNIZIK. He noted that Conference, Workshops and Symposium are avenue where ideas and knowledge are shared to the wider society, with the aim of solving problems of the Nation.

 

Speaking about the University, he noted that in UNIZIK, we practice what we preach by showing our capacity and competence for the development of our society. Prof. Ahaneku expressed hope that the deliberation will add value and knowledge that will provide solution to the problems of the Nation.

The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Tracie Chima Utoh-Ezeajugh welcomed all to this year’s Annual Conference. She also thanked the keynote and Guest speakers for coming to untie the knots of national economy. The Dean also expressed her profound gratitude to the VC and his Management Team for their uncommon support to the Faculty. The conference, she said, will give ample opportunity to contribute towards proffering solutions and the way forward to the economic problems of the nation.  Prof. Utoh-Ezeajugh posits that the theme of this year’s conference caught across political ideals and emerging harsh economic realities on the average Nigerian.

 

The Guest Speaker of the Conference, His Lordship Most Rev. Prof. G. Igwebike Onah said he was happy to be in UNIZIK and that he was impressed at the positive strides in the University.  In his lecture titled: “Permanence of change and its challenges”. His Lordship highlighted the Nigerian Cultures, while reminding the Faculty of its huge role in preserving, promoting and generally contributing to culture, whether subjectively or objectively. He concluded with a serenity prayer: “O God give us the grace to change the things that can and should be changed, the serenity to discern the difference and the prudence to manage one and another”.

 

The keynote speaker, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu expressed joy for being in UNIZIK and wished to be invited again. He thanked the Faculty for the honour. He proffered much suggestion on how change can be effectively introduced and managed in our country Nigeria, especially in areas of finance and economy.

 

Speaking also, the lead paper presenter, Dr. Emmanuel Obidimma said that the concept of change management is the technique for managing the people, since change has become a constant phenomenon in virtually all facets of human endeavor. He extensively discussed some fundamental changes, its processes, and impact to mankind.

  • ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

2.1      POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

The following may apply for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma programmes:

  1. 1.1. Graduates from approved Universities who hold first degree classification with FCGPA of 1.50 and above on a 5point scale.

2.1.2.       Candidates from approved Polytechnics or Monotechnics who hold a Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Upper Credit.

2.2.   MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES

The following may apply for admission into Masters Programmes:

  • Graduates from approved Universities who hold the appropriate degree in the proposed field of study with minimum FCGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale or a minimum of 60% for Universities that do not use FCGPA.
  • Holders of Postgraduate Diploma from recognized institutions with an FCGPA of 3.50 and above (on a 5 point scale).
  • DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMMES

Graduates from approved universities who hold Mastersdegree in the proposed field of study with minimum FCGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale or a minimum of 70% for universities that do not use the FCGPA

  • MINIMUM GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for any Postgraduate programme must possess a minimum of 5 credits including English Language and any four relevant subjects at one or two sittings from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or TCII(Faculty of Education only) based on the Departmental/Faculty and General University Requirements.

  • DURATION OF THE PROGRAMMES

4.1     Postgraduate Diploma Programme(PGD)

Full-Time Postgraduate Diploma programme: minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of three (3) semesters. Part- Time: minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters

Note: For the Faculty of Engineering Professional PGD: Full-Time: minimum of 4 Semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters. Part-Time: minimum of six (6) Semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters

4.2   Master Degree Programmes

Full-Time Masters Degree programmes: minimum of three (3) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters. Part-time programme: minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters

4.3   Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme

Full-Time PhD programmes: minimum of six (6) semesters and a maximum of ten (10) semesters. Part-Time programme: minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of fourteen (14) semesters.

  • Enter your username and password and click on “sign in”.
  • Follow the instruction on the page following each step as indicated to access the application form.
  • Click on Step one on the menu bar on your left to generate and print the (Remita Retrieval Reference) Number for the ICT Fee (N1, 000).
  • Click on Step two on the menu bar on your left to generate and print the (Remita Retrieval Reference) Number for the Application Fee (N10, 000).
  • Take the RRR to any bank of your choice for payment of Application Fee and ICT Fee.

To confirm payment:

  • Click on step three. Type the RRR for the ICT Fee in the RRR textbox and click on “Confirm”. Again, type in the RRR for the Application fee in the RRR textbox and click on “Confirm”
  • Once the confirmation for the two payments is successful, you can proceed to step four to fill your application form
  • Click on step four. Fill and submit online the completed Application Form, scanning and attaching the claimed certificates, including O’level certificates.

5.2   Print the completed Application Form for your personal use. You will require this document in the course of the admission and registration.

5.3   Download and print a copy of the Transcript Request Form. The Transcript Request Form should be sent to your former Institution for your academic transcripts. Any change of name should be indicated in the transcript form.

5.4   Applicants should include the names, phone number and e-mail addresses of two Referees. At least one of the referees must be Academics not lower than the rank of Senior Lecturer.

5.5   Sale of Form Ends on 4th August, 2017.

Submission of Form Ends on 11th August, 2017.

Transcripts should be forwarded to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies not later than 25th August, 2017.

5.6   PhD applicants in submitting their forms, shall upload a proposal of not more than five type-written pages that should include:

  1. Topic (not more than 18 words)
  2. Brief background of the Study
  3. Aim and Objectives/Purpose
  4. Methodology
  5. Expected Outcomes
  6. References             .

5.7   Qualified Applicants will be invited for Screening Test and Proposal Defence (PhD only) from 28th August, 2017.

In the UNIZIK Bulletin of Vol. 10 No. 10, page 6 in March, 27th, 2017, Iloh, Miracle Ugochukwu of the Department of Electrical Engineering was published as the best graduating student for 2015/2016, but the correct information is that Nkama, Silas Joseph, 2011234007 is the best graduating student for the 2015/2016 Academic Session, with Second Class Upper Division. The mistake is regretted.

FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES LOSES STAFF

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences has lost a staff of the Department of Building, Mr. Nnabuike Joshua Obi. The sad event occurred on 19th of April, 2017.  Until his death was a Principal Laboratory Technologist. Burial Arrangements: The burial comes up on the 29th of May, 2017 at his compound, Umuchiana village in Ekwulobia.

  • Nnatuanya Patricia Iveonu (Ojinma) nee Anunobi whose death occurred on Friday, 28th of April, 2017. Aged 82. Burial Arrangements:  Thursday, 25th of May, 2017 – Service of Song by 6.00 p.m. at her husband compound, No. 30 Onyekuba; Friday, 26th of May, 2017 – Burial Service at her husband compound; Sunday, 28th of May, 2017 – Outing Service at All Saints Anglican Church, Ameanyi, Awka.   Until her death, she was the mother of Nnatuanya Patrick Chinwuba of the Directorate of Sports and Nnatuanya Christian Chidioke of the Department of Security Unit.

N/B:  SSANU members are hereby notified to attend the burial on Friday, 26th of May, 2017.

  • Ezinne Phoebe Ukamaka Onwubaliki, who died on Tuesday, 21st of March, 2017. She was aged 84. Funeral Arrangements: Thursday, 25th May, 2017 by 5.00 p.m. – Service of Songs at late Mr. E. C. Onwubalili’s Compound, Abor Village, Ogidi; Friday, 26th of May, 2017 by 10.00 a.m. – Funeral service at Ebenezer (Ang.) Church, Ogidi.  Until her death, she was the mother-in-law to Prof. Makodi Biereenu-Nnabugwu of the Department of Political Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences.
