The students’ Affairs Department is a non-academic department that handles students’ welfare matters. The department is generally responsible for such matters as students’ accommodation, students’ organisations, transportation, students’ union government (SUG), sporting activities, National Youth Service Corps Mobilization and other ancillary matters relating to the welfare of the students. The department serves as a link between the students and the university. No student graduates without passing through the students’ affairs department. There is a robust data bank (soft and hard copies) of all the decisions of the senate involving students. As a major clearing house, no student is allowed to graduate without being cleared.
The university operated on a non-residential status prior to 1998/99 academic session. The non-residential clause was however removed in the same session. Since the university has limited accommodation for the students, she is still open to partnerships towards the development of more hostels. However, the department also looks into relationships between off-campus students and their landlords, and has often intervened in the landlord/tenant disputes involving students, settling matters amicably to the satisfaction of both parties.

An effective and efficient transportation system is a major concern of the students’ affairs department. Through the directorate of transport under the control of the students’ union, a hitch-free commercial transportation system has been put in place to convey students to and from campus. The department also holds interactive sessions regularly with the drivers of these commercial buses to keep them abreast of management expectations and service delivery.
- Students’ Discipline
As the motto of the university implies, discipline is a ‘sine qua non’ for graduation. There is in a place a students’ Disciplinary Committee where offenders are allowed a fair hearing on any allegation.
Every registered student should have an identity card issued by the registrar. The Students are advised to always be in possession of their identity cards, especially when they are leaving campus. Students must present their identity cards before they are allowed to sit for any examination in the university.
- Health and welfare
The students’ Affairs Department liaises with the University’s Medical centre to ensure that the students’ health and well being are given prominent attention. The University Medical Centre is properly placed to provide primary healthcare to students. Even in the hostels, sickbays are provided with medical doctors and nurses attached in order to give any ailing student immediate attention.
- Students’ organizations
Socio-cultural and religious organizations exist on campus. The organizations are registered after fulfilling the necessary conditions. Membership of student organisations is open to all students irrespective of sex, race, ethnic group and religion. The organizations are assisted in several ways to help them meet their noble objectives through guidance and supervision. Non-registered organisations are banned in the campus. No student shall participate in or be a member of any clandestine organization. The consequences of participation in any activity of such organisations are severe and include summary expulsion from the university. Students are advised to check with the students affairs department for registered organisations.
- Students’ Union Government

In Nnamdi Azikiwe University, there is a vibrant students unionism. Students are allowed to freely choose their leaders without interference from the university management. The elections are usually free, fair and peaceful, and have been acclaimed by all students as a model for others to emulate.
An electoral committee headed by the Dean, Students’ affairs sees to the election and swearing in of successful office holders in the Students’ Union Government.
Before elections are held, usually during the first semester between November and December, any bans on politics and political activities are usually lifted to set the ball rolling for the elections. During the period, forms for various offices in the SUG are made available for sale to interested students who wish to be part of the next Government. Interested students are subsequently screened by the security department, after which those who succeed go for the elections.
The Sudents’ Union Government consists of various elective offices which include:
-The Executive Council
-The Students’ Representative Council
-The Judiciary Council
The executive Council
The Executive council consists of the following members:
- The president
- The Vice-President
- The secretary General
- The Assistant Secretary
- Financial Secretary

The Students’ Representative Council consists of one representative from each Department, except for the Faculty of Law and Medicine, where representation is on the basis of Year of Study.
The Judiciary Council consists of one judge elected from each faculty of the university, except the Faculty of Law, which shall have three judges.
The SUG affords the students a veritable opportunity to learn the art of governance and imbibe the best ideals of leadership. With the presidential democratic system in place in Nigeria, the different organs of the Students’ Union Executive, Legislative and Judiciary are involved in a dialectical interplay of forces that serve as a forerunner of what the students expect to see in later life.
- National Youth Service Mobilization
This is a very important arm of the Students’ Affairs Department. It prepares graduating students for mobilization by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The mobilization of students is done in Batches A,B and C. The batches enable all graduates in a year to be captured for mobilization.
- Religious activities
