Nnamdi Azikiwe University Imperial Barrel Award Winners were at the office of the Vice-Chancellor recently to present their award.
Welcoming them, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS thanked and congratulated the Team for making the University proud. He said that the Team is living up to the motto of the University which is, ‘excellence, discipline and self-reliance’. He also appreciated the lecturers of the Department for their mentorship which has translated to the success of the team. Prof. Ahaneku prayed God to see the Team through so that they will excel at the Global Final competition in Houston.
Earlier, the Head of the Department, Dr. Nobert Ajaegwu thanked the VC for his support to the team. He also appreciated him for the good works he is doing in the University. He presented the award to the VC. Speaking on the Competition, he explained that the Imperials Barrel Award Competition is being organized by American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) for post-graduate students in the field of Geo-Sciences. In each of the seven continents apart from the USA, one school is to represent each continent after the regional final, while the USA presents six (6) schools from the six sections in the United States.
It is worthy to note that UNIZIK participated in sub-Sahara African Regional finals that featured four (4) schools, three (3) from Nigeria and one (1) from Ivory Coast, after which UNIZIK emerged first and were selected to represent Sub-Sahara African regional in the African regional finals which took place in South Africa, Cape town from 22nd – 24th February, 2017. Following the stiff competition, UNIZIK took first position as well and this qualifies them to represent the African Continent at the Global finals of the competitions which will take place in Houston, Texas, USA on 1stt April, 2017 at the Association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition.

The Department of Geography & Meteorology, UNIZIK joined the world Meteorological Organisation to celebrate the 2017 world Meteorological Day, 23rd of March, 2017.
The event which was held at the Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies (COCES), UNIZIK was attended by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Nkem Okeke, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, Fas represented by the DVC (Academic), Prof. Charles Esimone, Director General, NIMET, Prof. Abubakar Mashi, represented by Usman Abduraman, a representative of Sen. Dr. Andy Ubah, the Guest Lecturer and Vice-President, Association of Nigeria Geographers, Prof. P. A. O. Odjugo, Deans, HODs, Professors, Staff and Students and others from related Departments in the State.
Speaking during her welcome remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Valerie C. Nnodu expressed her delight at dignitaries who honoured the event. According to her, the event is held annually round the world, and it showcases the essential contribution of National Meteorological and Hydrological services to the safety and well-being of the society. Also, she said that the event is commemorated yearly by the WMO, to keep constant watch on the weather and climate for the better life and future of human kind. She thanked the VC for his support and prayed for God’s divine guardian.
The Deputy Governor applauded the Department of Geography and Meteorology for joining the world to know what happens in our surroundings. He encouraged them, while calling for research grant for more research in such regards. To the students, he urged that they make better use of their time while they still could.
During the VC’s remark, the DVC (Academic) said it was a great thing that the University joins to commemorate the event annually. Again, he appreciated the Department which he said was great in achievement. He thanked all who made it a point of duty to come, while calling for financial support for the Department for its publications.
During the lecture, the Guest Lecturer gave a detailed lecture on the topic of this year’s commemoration: “Understanding the Cloud”. He said clouds are suspended visible mass of minute liquid droplets (warm clouds), or frozen crystals (cold clouds) in the atmosphere, formed through the condensation of water vapour. On ways to enhance cloud formation, Prof. Odjugo enumerated the following: Reduction of deforestation, afforestation, urban forestry and greenery, protection of watershed and course of rivers, encouraging infiltration, avoiding water pollution amongst others.
In his remark, the representative of the NIMET boss, Usman Abduraman said this year’s topic was apt, as it enlightens our knowledge and understanding of the cloud, which also helps in solving issues that may affect our socio-economic activities.
The HOD, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji in his speech said the Department joined in the annual event in 2015, and that discussions are ongoing with NIMET and relevant bodies to assist the Department to actualize the purchase of instrument to perform weather predictions. He thanked the VC and his Management Team for their support, while still seeking assistance for other challenges, one of which is insufficient staff.
After the presentation of the Department’s publication by Prof. Phil-Eze, the Chairman of the event, Prof. M. A. Ijioma, presented the Departmental publications to Miss Chioma Obadi who is a 300 level student of the Department.
As activities marking this year’s mothers’ day, the Catholic Women Organisation of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Chaplaincy on Friday, 24th March,, 2017, visited UNIZIK High School and UNIZIK Nursery/Primary School respectively.
Welcoming the chaplaincy Executive and other members present, the Principal, UNIZIK High School, Mrs. Onyejike Chibueze victoria thanked them for their thoughtfulness and love towards the children. She expressed joy over the gifts which the women brought for the students.
The President, Catholic Women Organisation of the Chaplaincy, Prof. Ify Emejulu, advised the students against making handsets their idol. She urged them to be good ambassadors of their school, parents and society at large.
The Chaplaincy Vice-President, Mr. Carol Ikeme prayed for God’s protection and guidance on the students.
At UNIZIK Nursery/Primary School, the pupils sang and danced with the women. The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Nkoli Ejesi welcomed them. The President of the chaplaincy CWO, again, advised the pupils to obey their parents so that their day will be long. Speaking further, she advised them to learn and speak Igbo Language fluently because it is their identity.
The Vice-President, Mrs. Carol Ikeme also prayed for the pupils.
The school head girl, Miss Oge Arinze in a vote of thanks, thanked the women for their gifts, time and advice. She prayed God to bless them.
Earlier, the women of the Chapel of Redemption, UNIZIK Chapter also paid a visit on the pupils of UNIZIK Nursery/Primary School in the spirit of mothering Sunday. They also presented the pupils with items.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS, has approved the election of Dr. (Mrs.) Constance Ifeyinwa Okoli as the new sub-dean of the Faculty of Education.
The election was done by the Faculty Board of the Faculty for the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 sessions with effect from 7th of November, 2016.
The former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mni has applauded UNIZIK on the level of infrastructure and physical development, which is an evidence of good leadership. He made this commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, recently.
Welcoming them, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS said he was delighted to have a very revered personality in the UNIZIK. He thanked Mallam Nuhu for coming to share in his wealth of knowledge. He noted that his visit to Nnamdi Azikiwe University would add knowledge and exposure to staff and students of the University.
Prof. Ahaneku appreciated the Chairman of the event, the former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mac-John Nwaobiala for being part of the University’s event.
Speaking earlier, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mni opined that he felt highly honoured to have been chosen as the Convocation Lecturer, while expressing appreciation, he thanked the Vice-Chancellor and his management team for the opportunity accorded him.
The former Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mni commended UNIZIK on the quality of graduates produced. Speaking on the theme, “Leadership and Challenges of National Unity in Nigeria”, he stated that there is need to cement the yawning cracks in Nigeria.
Present also to receive Mallam Nuhu were, Prof. Charles Esimone, the DVC (Academic), Prof. Carol Arinze-Umeobi (Administration), Council members and the University Management amongst others.
University Convocation has been said to be a true University Culture and tradition. According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. J. E. Ahaneku, FAS since there is Matriculation every year, Convocations also should be held annually as well. The Vice Chancellor stated this during a press release with Journalists at the Council Chamber of the University recently.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS thanked the Federal Government and its agencies (TETfund and NEEDS INTERVENTION FUNDS), Benefactors, and Friends for their support to the University. He called on all other well-meaning Nigerians to partner with the University in building of hostels for students, so as to enable them mould the students both in character and learning. He also, thanked the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano for the donation of a Coaster bus to the students, reconstruction of Ifite Road and above all, for the provision of security in the State. The VC also appreciated his colleagues for their diligence and dedication to their duties while urging them not to relent.
Prof. Ahaneku congratulated the seventy (70) best graduating students and the overall best graduating student for having distinguished themselves. He beckoned on benefactors to extend scholarship to the graduands who have distinguished themselves to further their studies. Furthermore, he opined that two hundred (200) PhD graduands have been produced from different disciplines, which is the highest level of man-power and capacity building.
The University, Prof. Ahaneku concluded has created a micro-environment for hands-off that is, a platform to train and re-train professionals in the institution. Moreso, he stated that UNIZIK PERFORMING Departments (Music and Theatre Arts Dept.) will soon commence weekly performance, to build competence.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University has shown that truly, hard work pays, by giving a pat on the back of graduating students who were best in their departments and faculties. Like they say, there is always first among the best, in this case, a student of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering; Ozofor, Henry Ikenna came out the best over-all in the 2015/2016 academic session.
While encouraging the students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, said he was glad that the students were doing well. He promised to make effort to see that those who were best in their Faculties were rewarded after their NYSC, while encouraging upcoming students to do even better. Applications are invited from qualified candidates, particularly Practising Journalists without any qualification in Journalism or Mass Communication for admission into the Professional Diploma in Journalism (PDJ) Programme offered by the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The programme is aimed at equipping journalists, especially those who have practiced the profession or several years without any formal qualification in Journalism or Mass Communication, with the theoretical knowledge to remedy their deficiency.
Entry Qualification
At least five O’ Level credits obtained in not more than two sittings, including English Language.
Duration of Programme
The (PDJ) is a part time programme that is expected to run for a minimum of three semesters of 18 calendar months.
Nature of Programme
The PDJ is a part-time programme in which practicing Journalists will attend lectures two to three days in a week between 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. to give them the freedom to attend to their daily professional assignments in the morning hours.
Take-Off of Programme
The programme has been approved to take off on Monday, 13th April, 2017.

This is to alert the University Community of infiltration into the University of people with questionable character, who engage in various crimes within the University while disguising as staff.
Worthy of such crime is the case of Chief Matron Njoku Grace of Medical Centre who gave lift to staff on Monday, 20th March, 2017 and lost her belongings in the process.
The woman stopped at the tower round about on close of work for the people to enter the vehicle and the criminal also rushed and entered the vehicle. - Mazi Hilary Ihegihu, who died on the 2nd of March, 2017. He will be buried on the 7th of April, 2017 at his village in Duruemezie, Mbieri, Imo State. Until his death, he was the father of Dr. Chima Ihegihu, a staff of the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, CHS, UNIZIK.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Imperial Barrel Award Winners were at the office of the Vice-Chancellor recently to present their award.
Welcoming them, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS thanked and congratulated the Team for making the University proud. He said that the Team is living up to the motto of the University which is, ‘excellence, discipline and self-reliance’. He also appreciated the lecturers of the Department for their mentorship which has translated to the success of the team. Prof. Ahaneku prayed God to see the Team through so that they will excel at the Global Final competition in Houston.
Earlier, the Head of the Department, Dr. Nobert Ajaegwu thanked the VC for his support to the team. He also appreciated him for the good works he is doing in the University. He presented the award to the VC. Speaking on the Competition, he explained that the Imperials Barrel Award Competition is being organized by American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) for post-graduate students in the field of Geo-Sciences. In each of the seven continents apart from the USA, one school is to represent each continent after the regional final, while the USA presents six (6) schools from the six sections in the United States.
It is worthy to note that UNIZIK participated in sub-Sahara African Regional finals that featured four (4) schools, three (3) from Nigeria and one (1) from Ivory Coast, after which UNIZIK emerged first and were selected to represent Sub-Sahara African regional in the African regional finals which took place in South Africa, Cape town from 22nd – 24th February, 2017. Following the stiff competition, UNIZIK took first position as well and this qualifies them to represent the African Continent at the Global finals of the competitions which will take place in Houston, Texas, USA on 1stt April, 2017 at the Association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition.

The Department of Geography & Meteorology, UNIZIK joined the world Meteorological Organisation to celebrate the 2017 world Meteorological Day, 23rd of March, 2017.
The event which was held at the Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies (COCES), UNIZIK was attended by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Nkem Okeke, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, Fas represented by the DVC (Academic), Prof. Charles Esimone, Director General, NIMET, Prof. Abubakar Mashi, represented by Usman Abduraman, a representative of Sen. Dr. Andy Ubah, the Guest Lecturer and Vice-President, Association of Nigeria Geographers, Prof. P. A. O. Odjugo, Deans, HODs, Professors, Staff and Students and others from related Departments in the State.
Speaking during her welcome remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Valerie C. Nnodu expressed her delight at dignitaries who honoured the event. According to her, the event is held annually round the world, and it showcases the essential contribution of National Meteorological and Hydrological services to the safety and well-being of the society. Also, she said that the event is commemorated yearly by the WMO, to keep constant watch on the weather and climate for the better life and future of human kind. She thanked the VC for his support and prayed for God’s divine guardian.
The Deputy Governor applauded the Department of Geography and Meteorology for joining the world to know what happens in our surroundings. He encouraged them, while calling for research grant for more research in such regards. To the students, he urged that they make better use of their time while they still could.
During the VC’s remark, the DVC (Academic) said it was a great thing that the University joins to commemorate the event annually. Again, he appreciated the Department which he said was great in achievement. He thanked all who made it a point of duty to come, while calling for financial support for the Department for its publications.
During the lecture, the Guest Lecturer gave a detailed lecture on the topic of this year’s commemoration: “Understanding the Cloud”. He said clouds are suspended visible mass of minute liquid droplets (warm clouds), or frozen crystals (cold clouds) in the atmosphere, formed through the condensation of water vapour. On ways to enhance cloud formation, Prof. Odjugo enumerated the following: Reduction of deforestation, afforestation, urban forestry and greenery, protection of watershed and course of rivers, encouraging infiltration, avoiding water pollution amongst others.
In his remark, the representative of the NIMET boss, Usman Abduraman said this year’s topic was apt, as it enlightens our knowledge and understanding of the cloud, which also helps in solving issues that may affect our socio-economic activities.
The HOD, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji in his speech said the Department joined in the annual event in 2015, and that discussions are ongoing with NIMET and relevant bodies to assist the Department to actualize the purchase of instrument to perform weather predictions. He thanked the VC and his Management Team for their support, while still seeking assistance for other challenges, one of which is insufficient staff.
After the presentation of the Department’s publication by Prof. Phil-Eze, the Chairman of the event, Prof. M. A. Ijioma, presented the Departmental publications to Miss Chioma Obadi who is a 300 level student of the Department.
As activities marking this year’s mothers’ day, the Catholic Women Organisation of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Chaplaincy on Friday, 24th March,, 2017, visited UNIZIK High School and UNIZIK Nursery/Primary School respectively.
Welcoming the chaplaincy Executive and other members present, the Principal, UNIZIK High School, Mrs. Onyejike Chibueze victoria thanked them for their thoughtfulness and love towards the children. She expressed joy over the gifts which the women brought for the students.
The President, Catholic Women Organisation of the Chaplaincy, Prof. Ify Emejulu, advised the students against making handsets their idol. She urged them to be good ambassadors of their school, parents and society at large.
The Chaplaincy Vice-President, Mr. Carol Ikeme prayed for God’s protection and guidance on the students.
At UNIZIK Nursery/Primary School, the pupils sang and danced with the women. The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Nkoli Ejesi welcomed them. The President of the chaplaincy CWO, again, advised the pupils to obey their parents so that their day will be long. Speaking further, she advised them to learn and speak Igbo Language fluently because it is their identity.
The Vice-President, Mrs. Carol Ikeme also prayed for the pupils.
The school head girl, Miss Oge Arinze in a vote of thanks, thanked the women for their gifts, time and advice. She prayed God to bless them.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS, has approved the election of Dr. (Mrs.) Constance Ifeyinwa Okoli as the new sub-dean of the Faculty of Education.
The election was done by the Faculty Board of the Faculty for the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 sessions with effect from 7th of November, 2016.
The former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mni has applauded UNIZIK on the level of infrastructure and physical development, which is an evidence of good leadership. He made this commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, recently.
Welcoming them, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS said he was delighted to have a very revered personality in the UNIZIK. He thanked Mallam Nuhu for coming to share in his wealth of knowledge. He noted that his visit to Nnamdi Azikiwe University would add knowledge and exposure to staff and students of the University.
Prof. Ahaneku appreciated the Chairman of the event, the former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mac-John Nwaobiala for being part of the University’s event.
Speaking earlier, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mni opined that he felt highly honoured to have been chosen as the Convocation Lecturer, while expressing appreciation, he thanked the Vice-Chancellor and his management team for the opportunity accorded him.
The former Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mni commended UNIZIK on the quality of graduates produced. Speaking on the theme, “Leadership and Challenges of National Unity in Nigeria”, he stated that there is need to cement the yawning cracks in Nigeria.
Present also to receive Mallam Nuhu were, Prof. Charles Esimone, the DVC (Academic), Prof. Carol Arinze-Umeobi (Administration), Council members and the University Management amongst others.
University Convocation has been said to be a true University Culture and tradition. According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. J. E. Ahaneku, FAS since there is Matriculation every year, Convocations also should be held annually as well. The Vice Chancellor stated this during a press release with Journalists at the Council Chamber of the University recently.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS thanked the Federal Government and its agencies (TETfund and NEEDS INTERVENTION FUNDS), Benefactors, and Friends for their support to the University. He called on all other well-meaning Nigerians to partner with the University in building of hostels for students, so as to enable them mould the students both in character and learning. He also, thanked the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano for the donation of a Coaster bus to the students, reconstruction of Ifite Road and above all, for the provision of security in the State. The VC also appreciated his colleagues for their diligence and dedication to their duties while urging them not to relent.
Prof. Ahaneku congratulated the seventy (70) best graduating students and the overall best graduating student for having distinguished themselves. He beckoned on benefactors to extend scholarship to the graduands who have distinguished themselves to further their studies. Furthermore, he opined that two hundred (200) PhD graduands have been produced from different disciplines, which is the highest level of man-power and capacity building.
The University, Prof. Ahaneku concluded has created a micro-environment for hands-off that is, a platform to train and re-train professionals in the institution. Moreso, he stated that UNIZIK PERFORMING Departments (Music and Theatre Arts Dept.) will soon commence weekly performance, to build competence.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University has shown that truly, hard work pays, by giving a pat on the back of graduating students who were best in their departments and faculties. Like they say, there is always first among the best, in this case, a student of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering; Ozofor, Henry Ikenna came out the best over-all in the 2015/2016 academic session.
While encouraging the students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, said he was glad that the students were doing well. He promised to make effort to see that those who were best in their Faculties were rewarded after their NYSC, while encouraging upcoming students to do even better. Applications are invited from qualified candidates, particularly Practising Journalists without any qualification in Journalism or Mass Communication for admission into the Professional Diploma in Journalism (PDJ) Programme offered by the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The programme is aimed at equipping journalists, especially those who have practiced the profession or several years without any formal qualification in Journalism or Mass Communication, with the theoretical knowledge to remedy their deficiency.
Entry Qualification
At least five O’ Level credits obtained in not more than two sittings, including English Language.
Duration of Programme
The (PDJ) is a part time programme that is expected to run for a minimum of three semesters of 18 calendar months.
Nature of Programme
The PDJ is a part-time programme in which practicing Journalists will attend lectures two to three days in a week between 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. to give them the freedom to attend to their daily professional assignments in the morning hours.
Take-Off of Programme
The programme has been approved to take off on Monday, 13th April, 2017.

This is to alert the University Community of infiltration into the University of people with questionable character, who engage in various crimes within the University while disguising as staff.
Worthy of such crime is the case of Chief Matron Njoku Grace of Medical Centre who gave lift to staff on Monday, 20th March, 2017 and lost her belongings in the process.
The woman stopped at the tower round about on close of work for the people to enter the vehicle and the criminal also rushed and entered the vehicle. On the way, others stopped at various points, remaining this unknown woman who alighted last but before disembarking from the vehicle, she stole the purse of the Matron containing N23,000.00 (twenty three thousand naira only), drivers license and ATM Card.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS regrets to announce the demise of:
- Mazi Hilary Ihegihu, who died on the 2nd of March, 2017. He will be buried on the 7th of April, 2017 at his village in Duruemezie, Mbieri, Imo State. Until his death, he was the father of Dr. Chima Ihegihu, a staff of the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, CHS, UNIZIK.
